The New York Times
recently called Mitzi Gaynor “an all-time great”
and the legendary superstar is delighting
audiences nationwide with her critically
acclaimed one-woman musical comedy memoir
Mitzi Gaynor: Razzle Dazzle! My
Life Behind the
Sequins.
The Emmy®
winning and Golden Globe®
nominated star of classic films including Les
Girls, Anything Goes, There’s No Business
Like Show Business and Rodgers &
Hammerstein’s South Pacific,
lights up the stage in this
unforgettable, lively and
charming 90-minute multimedia tour-de-force full
of side-splitting stories, intimate reflections,
treasured songs,
stunning video montages
and breathtaking costume creations by longtime
collaborator and friend, fantastical fashion
designer Bob Mackie.
Mitzi Gaynor: My Life Behind the
Sequins
is an intimate evening of laughs,
love and music
which Rex Reed of the New York Observer
calls “a total star-spangled package of energy
and joy.”
Mitzi’s captivating stories
generate genuine laughs as she offers treasured
anecdotes of some of her famous friends and
costars including Gene Kelly, Rossano Brazzi
and Marilyn Monroe. She details the
laugh-out-loud results of convincing good pal
Ethel Merman to attend her new show in New
Jersey, the rigors of readying herself to meet
the Duke of Windsor, her early days with
the Civic Light Opera and 20th
Century Fox, her brief love affair with
Howard Hughes and the memorable first date
with her husband-to-be, agent/producer, Jack
Bean (and a marriage that endured 52 years).
These and other priceless
recollections are interwoven with remarkable
video montages,
culled from
Mitzi’s prolific film, television and concert
career, as well as classic and familiar songs
all of which illuminate and advance the
story of her life behind the sequins. Backed by
a seven-piece band, led by music director Ed
Czach on piano,
Mitzi performs “Seems Like Old
Times” (Lombardo/
Loeb), “Show Off” (Lambert/ Morrison),
“Everything Old is New Again” (Peter Allen), “If
I Had You” (Campbell/
Connelly), “There’s No Business Like Show
Business” (Irving Berlin), a medley of songs
from “South Pacific” (Rodgers/ Hammerstein),
“Fabulous Places” (Leslie Bricusse) with special
material referencing many of the places Mitzi
played throughout her career, “Taking A Chance
on Love” (Duke/ LaTouche/ Fetter) and her long
time finale song “You Are The Sunshine of My
Life” (Stevie Wonder), which proclaims her
genuine lifelong affection for the audience.
This love letter to a
great era of show business,
which celebrated
gossip columnist Liz Smith labels “sensational,”
has played to sold-out audiences across
the country, including an acclaimed two week
engagement in New York City. Mitzi
Gaynor: My Life Behind the Sequins is a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be “up close
and personal” with the electrifying magic and
incredible spirit of a true entertainment icon.
